Enneagram Basics: Understanding Your Type and Why It Matters
- Jen Hanson-Peterson
I've noticed a pattern in my coaching sessions. A leader will describe a frustrating, recurring challenge—either with a colleague, with a loved one, or within themselves—and then they'll say something like, 'I just don't understand why this keeps happening.'
That feeling of being stuck in a loop you can't see is one of the most common experiences in our professional (and personal) lives. It's also where a tool like the Enneagram can feel like someone is finally turning on the lights. Far more than just another personality test, the Enneagram offers a profound map of human patterns that can transform how we understand ourselves and others.
What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram is a dynamic system that identifies nine distinct personality types, each with its own core motivations, fears, and patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The word 'Enneagram' comes from the Greek words 'ennea' (nine) and 'grammos' (figure), referring to the nine-pointed geometric figure that represents the system.
Unlike other personality frameworks that focus primarily on behaviours, the Enneagram delves deeper, revealing the underlying motivations and core beliefs that drive our actions. It's not about putting people in boxes—it's about illuminating the patterns that shape how we see and navigate the world.
The Nine Enneagram Types
Each Enneagram type represents a distinct way of being in the world, with its own gifts, challenges, and growth paths:
Type 1: The Strict Perfectionist – Driven by a desire to be good, right, and correct. Ones strive for improvement and have a strong sense of purpose and integrity.
Type 2: The Considerate Helper – Motivated by a need to be loved and appreciated. Twos are deeply attuned to others' needs and find fulfillment in supporting those around them.
Type 3: The Competitive Achiever – Energised by accomplishment and validation. Threes are adaptable, goal-oriented, and excel at bringing visions to life.
Type 4: The Intense Creative – Searching for authentic self-expression and meaning. Fours have a deep connection to emotions and value depth, beauty, and uniqueness.
Type 5: The Quiet Specialist– Seeking knowledge and understanding. Fives observe the world with clarity and insight, valuing independence and mastery.
Type 6: The Loyal Sceptic – Motivated by security and support. Sixes are attuned to potential challenges and excel at problem-solving and building trustworthy systems.
Type 7: The Enthusiastic Visionary– Drawn to experience and possibility. Sevens bring energy, optimism, and versatility to life's adventures.
Type 8: The Active Controller – Driven by a desire for strength and control. Eights are protective, decisive, and willing to stand up for what matters.
Type 9: The Adaptive Peacemaker – Seeking harmony and connection. Nines have a gift for seeing multiple perspectives and creating inclusive environments.
Why Knowing Your Enneagram Type Matters
Understanding your Enneagram type offers transformative benefits that extend far beyond simple self-awareness:
1. Deeper Self-Understanding
The Enneagram doesn't just describe your behaviours—it illuminates why you do what you do. This deeper understanding helps you recognise patterns that have been operating beneath your awareness for years. As one client shared: "It was like someone turned on the lights in a room I'd been navigating in the dark. Suddenly, patterns I'd never noticed became crystal clear."
2. Enhanced Communication
When you understand your own communication style and those of others, interactions transform. You begin to recognise that what feels like deliberate frustration from others is often just a different way of processing information. For example, a direct Type 8 might seem confrontational to a harmony-seeking Type 9, while the Type 8 simply sees themselves as being efficient and clear.
3. Improved Relationships
The Enneagram offers powerful insights into relationship dynamics. When you understand that your partner's need for space (Type 5) isn't rejection but their way of recharging, or that your colleague's attention to detail (Type 1) isn't criticism but their way of ensuring quality, compassion naturally grows.
4. A Growth Pathway
Perhaps most importantly, the Enneagram offers specific development paths for each type. It shows both your natural gifts and your potential growth edges, creating a roadmap for personal development that honours your unique starting point. Rather than trying to become like someone else, you learn how to become a more integrated version of yourself.
5. Increased Empathy
Understanding the diverse ways people experience the world builds empathy. You begin to see that others aren't being difficult on purpose—they're operating from their own core motivations, just as you are. This understanding transforms judgment into curiosity and conflict into collaboration.
Beyond Basic Typing
While identifying your type is a valuable starting point, the richness of the Enneagram comes from exploring its depth. Each type has:
- Wings – The influence of adjacent types that create unique flavors of your main type
- Stress and Growth Points – How your type changes under pressure or during growth
- Instinctual Subtypes – How your basic drives for self-preservation, social connection, or one-to-one relationships influence your type expression
- Levels of Development – How your type manifests at different stages of emotional health
Getting Started with the Enneagram
If you're curious about discovering your Enneagram type, consider these approaches:
1. Take a validated assessment – While no test is perfect, scientifically-validated assessments like the iEQ9 Enneagram can provide a helpful starting point.
2. Read about each type – Notice which descriptions resonate most deeply with your inner experience, not just your behaviours.
3. Reflect on your core motivations – The Enneagram is about why you do what you do, not just what you do.
4. Consider feedback from others – Sometimes others can see patterns in us that we don't recognise ourselves.
5. Work with a certified Enneagram practitioner – A knowledgeable guide can help you navigate the nuances of the system and apply insights to your specific circumstances.
Final Thoughts
The Enneagram offers far more than just a label or category—it provides a compassionate map for understanding yourself and others at a deeper level. By illuminating the patterns that shape how we see the world, it creates pathways for more authentic connection, meaningful growth, and genuine appreciation of differences.
As you explore your Enneagram type, remember that the goal isn't to box yourself in, but to recognise the patterns that have been boxing you in without your awareness. With this understanding comes the freedom to respond more consciously, relate more authentically, and live from a place of greater presence and purpose.
